Harbor Freight Tools (HFT), the Dollar Tree of tool stores, houses the world's greatest collection of mostly adequate, excellently mediocre, and very affordable tools. That's the reputation, at least. They're great on the wallet and suitable for emergency tool bags, assuming your life doesn't depend on them and you understand they might gloriously explode prematurely after a single use. If you need to sacrifice a tool for the greater good, the HFT stash bravely volunteers (and often survives!), and for that, we're forever thankful.
There is, however, one HFT tool that shouldn't be sacrificed or treated as an ordinary Harbor Freight specimen. For reasons unknown, Harbor Freight has just released a special edition, 24-karat-gold-plated ratchet—and we're pretty sure it's not a joke. Part of HFT's professional Icon tool lineup, the compact quarter-inch drive has a 90-tooth gear-to-gear mechanism for smooth ratcheting, a 4-degree arc swing per click, and an ergonomic grip.
But did you catch the part about gold? As Goldmember says, "I love gold! The look of it! The smell of it! The taste of it!" The whole dang thing is plated in 24-karat gold, which HFT assures wipes clean (not off?)—should you ever, ever actually use the golden ratchet. It's so ridiculous, we want to literally drive to HFT right now and pick up this golden ratchet—using a coupon, of course. Everything's better when it's smothered in gold, right?
So how much does the Icon quarter-inch drive professional special edition 24-karat gold-plated ratchet cost? Not nearly as much as actual jewelry, as the coating is probably very thin and the ratchet is rather small at only 6 inches in length. At $49.99, it's the perfect price for a stunningly confusing Father's Day gift that'll surely bring the bling. Backed by a lifetime warranty (that's a lifetime of gold, folks), the gold-plated ratchet is wrapped in "signature packaging" and includes a transparent stand. There's also a 3/8-inch drive gold-plated ratchet, too.
What's the verdict on HFT's golden ratchet? We're on the fence. Gold-plated fence.
